AS you get to know your Bundle of Joy, or your Curious Toddler, are there objects in nature that s/he remind you of, like the freshness of a crisp apple, the sweetness of a plump peach, or the lingering fragrance of a gardenia flower?

Share these thoughts verbally with your baby or toddler, and write these memories in a journal.

Here are some ways that you can immerse your baby or toddler in the natural world. The use and success of these activities will depend on your child’s level of development.

Board books with various textures of animals, and other objects in nature can be introduced.

Unique books, like those made of cloth, pop-up books, or shape books can add a rich dimension to your baby’s learning.

Name all that your baby attends to in nature.

Describe in a simple way what your baby is experiencing.

Lift the flap books can provide an interactive dimension to story time.

Environment, that special place to enjoy the sights and sounds in nature.

Offer various stuffed animals to your baby at play time. Which one seems to capture his/her attention the most? Read a board book about the chosen animal.

Find out what else your baby enjoys by observing positive reactions to outdoor exposure and build on these interests.

Join in baby’s antics when in a good mood, shaping these moments by tickling him/her with a favorite stuffed animal and making the animal apart of the game.

Order a photo taken of you and baby on a nature outing. Show it to him/her and name everyone in the photo.

You are the key to your baby’s appreciation for the natural world. Make it as enduring as you can.

Listen to and sing nature songs, like “Mary had a little Lamb” or “Old MacDonald had a Farm,” etc.

Explore different nature spaces, and notice how your toddler reacts.

Respond to any changes your toddler demonstrates to nature’s surprises.
